Meeting The King | June 21, 1968

A couple from North Yorkshire, Tony and Winnie Innes, will never forget meeting The King while holidaying in California in June 1968. Taken by an American friend to see Elvis' home in Beverly Hills, the couple rang the bell at the gates and the butler came out to talk to them. Later in the afternoon, a car reversed out of the drive and stopped next to them. They soon realised that Elvis was in the passenger seat and asked him if he would like to come to a convention run by the Elvis Fan Club in Britain.

Mrs Innes said: 'He gave me such a beautiful smile. Elvis said: 'Where will I be then?' And Tony said: 'Well, you will be on location for your next film. 'I couldn't believe I was seeing this fellow in person. We then followed him in his car and he stopped at the lights, so we stopped and he waved'.

Days later, the couple went to the studio recordings for his NBC-TV special at Burbank, which re-established the singer's reputation in the entertainment world. Mr Innes said: 'He was just sitting there and he started playing. It was fairly free and easy'. At the end of their holiday, the couple returned to Beverly Hills and managed to speak to Elvis a second time outside his home to say goodbye.

Mrs Innes said: 'Elvis was with us on his own and there were ten people stood in a semi-circle. He looked shy and very embarrassed but he said hello to everybody. I walked round the back of him and he was tall and beautiful with lovely long eye lashes. He said: 'Have you been waiting long?' And I said: Fifteen years! Tony asked him whether he had a message for the editor of the Elvis Monthly magazine [Albert Hand] and he said: Yes. You tell him to keep packing those punches'. Then he shook hands and put his arm around my shoulder.

The 'parade' footage is good to see as it puts you in the right context with color and b&w footage. The interviews of Elvis' Parents are well worth hearing too. The afternoon show footage is wonderful and electrifying : Here is Elvis in his prime rocking and rolling in front of 11.000 people. Highly recommended.
